How it works

1. First Appointment

We will contact you to arrange a suitable time for your first appointment. The first appointment lasts 30 mins and you will discuss any concerns you have, the benefits you are hoping to achieve from stopping smoking and how the appointments and medication work.

2. Receiving NRT

Your Stop Smoking Advisor will talk you through the different Nicotine Replacement Therapy and medication available. This will be posted to your address or sent to your GP.

3. Setting a quit date

Your Practitioner will help you plan and prepare for your quit date, taking into account any concerns or barriers you may feel towards quitting.

4. Weekly appointment

You will receive 12 weekly telephone appointments with your Stop Smoking Advisor.

Each appointment is 15 mins and is an opportunity to review your NRT or medication and discuss any concerns or struggles you might have had.

5. Four week quitter status

You’ve made it to 28 days and are 5 times more likely to stop for good! Your advisor will help adjust any NRT requirements you may have at this point.

6. Twelve week quitter status

Congratulations you have reached the end of the course and are a fully-fledged non-smoker.

7. Follow up

We’ll keep in touch after six weeks and at twelve months to offer any further support that you might need. If a relapse does occur, remember you can always come back and try again!

FAQ

WHY SHOULD I COME TO A STOP SMOKING SERVICE? I CAN BUY NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (NRT) FROM THE SHOP.

Research shows you have a better chance of quitting smoking and staying quit with the support from a specialist stop smoking service.

HOW LONG WILL IT BE UNTIL MY CRAVINGS STOP?

It happens very quickly. After 2 weeks your nicotine receptors will begin to die out and that’s when the cravings will begin to reduce. But keep in mind that if you use your medication as directed this will result in minimal cravings.

I'VE TRIED PATCHES AND THEY DON'T WORK

Did you use patches alone? They only provide 1/3rd of the nicotine that you used to get from cigarettes. This is why we urge you to use patches and an oral product and if you use it ‘on the hour, every hour’ it will prevent withdrawal symptoms and give you the best chance to quit.

CAN I JUST CUT DOWN?

Setting a quit date and stopping is a better option, research shows that you are more likely to quit and stay quit. We are commissioned to support those who are aiming to stop smoking completely.

WHY ARE YOU GIVING ME NICOTINE WHEN THAT'S WHAT I AM ADDICTED TO?

It may seem  counter-intuitive but the nicotine we provide is clean and doesn’t contain the harmful substances found in tobacco. It’s released slowly to prevent your nicotine receptors from becoming aggravated so they die out whilst you experience minimal withdrawal symptoms.

CAN I USE NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (NRT) IF I AM PREGNANT?

Yes, you can use nicotine replacement therapy, and its less harmful to you and your baby than smoking. Ideally, we like to use the least amount of NRT as we can. Our practitioner can discuss the best option for you.

WHAT ABOUT VAPING?

Public Health England state this is 95% safer than smoking and can be a very effective way of quitting. We don’t supply e-cigarettes as part of the course but we can support your quit attempt with you through behaviour change if you choose to purchase and use an e-cigarette.
