22 Apr There’s never been a better time to change
These are uncertain times for many. The world is adapting to new environments and many are left unsure. Klara, one of our stop smoking practitioners at One You Surrey, comments on the current situation and how there’s never been a better time for a change.
“The Game Changer”
Only a few months ago, I was lucky enough to have the chance to read a fellow master’s student’s blog article. In his article, he talked about how he became a “Game changer” by taking a 180-degree turn and embark on a completely new career path.
In his article, he analysed a well-known company’s software and his experience getting to learn about it while undertaking his work experience. I was so impressed by his article and happy for his success in his new path.
Are we all game changes?
A few years ago, I also made the decision to change the direction of my life and dedicate it to Public Health Nutrition. I left everything behind like my game changer friend. Since then, I have been fortunate to work for One You Surrey as part of my professional training as a Specialist Stop Smoking Practitioner.
Thrive Tribe (One You Surrey’s employer) is a healthy lifestyle services provider. They’re a value-led organisation and one of their top values “BE THE CHANGE”, is the one of most importance to me. We support many people who have made the decision to make a change in their life. Either by helping people to stop smoking, eat healthier, be more active and much more.
Almost 98 000 people have been helped to stop smoking by One You Surrey & it’s sister services.
They are all game-changers!
What makes one then to go ahead and become a game changer?
A lot of us learn from each other. Someone’s personal experience gives us inspiration and motivation, like a helping hand along the journey. We start to look, see, listen, ask questions, research, learn and then decide to make the first step. A deliberate choice is made. We set a target and jump in the hope that we will overcome our fears and doubts as we go along. Unless we make that leap, we won’t make the change.
Powers that force us to change
As if lightning just struck- we have just been inundated by the sudden shock of COVID-19. A highly infectious virus forcing us to change rapidly. It threatens our health and our broader economic and social existence on a global level. It challenges our greatest evolutionary ability of survival: adaptability. There is no choice, this change is forced on us.
Whether there is choice or not there is one thing in common in both scenarios,. We must overcome our own limitations/fears to make change.
Professor John Newton, Director of Health Improvement at Public Health England says:
“There has never been a more important time to stop smoking”
“In light of this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, there has never been a more important time to stop smoking. Not only for your own health but to protect those around you. It will also help alleviate the huge pressures on the NHS.”
So, what do you think – Are you a ‘game changer’?
