The benefits of quitting smoking

20-minutes

You’ve dropped the cigarette 20 minutes ago. Surely you can’t begin experiencing benefits already? Well you’re wrong.

Just 20 minutes after quitting your heart rate and blood pressure will begin to drop. The nicotine in a cigarette is a stimulant, which can cause nicotine-induced spikes in blood pressure and heart rate. This only happens over a short period of time. So when you drop the cigarette, your body works to return back to normal.

8-hours

Carbon Monoxide levels in the blood reduces by half and oxygen levels return to normal. Carbon monoxide is quick to connect with red blood cells but is slow to exit the body, taking as much as 1 day to be removed from the lungs.

Carbon monoxide is just one of many hazardous chemicals in cigarette smoke. To date, more than 7,000 chemical compounds, 250 of which are known to be poisonous and upwards of 70 that have been identified as carcinogens are known to be present in cigarette smoke.

When carbon monoxide is inhaled, it binds with haemoglobin in red blood cells to make carboxy-haemoglobin, This is then transported into the bloodstream. Once this happens, oxygen cannot bind with receptors on the same cell. And because carbon monoxide is much faster at binding with haemoglobin than oxygen (about 200 times faster). This will then have a negative effect on your ability to deliver oxygen around the body!

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colourless and odourless gas that is produced when incomplete burning of carbon-containing fuels occurs. It is present in indoor and outdoor air in varying amounts from things like:

  • Vehicle Exhausts ?
  • Open Fires ?
  • Boilers ?️
  • Cigarette Smoke ?

3-Days

Breathing becomes easier. Bronchial tubes start to relax and energy levels increase. Due to the bronchial tubes relaxing, air exchange becomes easier between carbon dioxide and oxygen. The lungs ability to fill up has also increased.

From 2-weeks

Your blood circulation will improve this makes all physical activity easier. You’ll also get a boost to your immune system making it easier to fight off cold or flu, the increased oxygen can also help reduce tiredness and the likelihood of headaches

1-Month
