Kick the habit

Think back to the last time you made a cup of tea. Can you remember turning the kettle on? Stirring your brew? Binning the teabag? Probably not, but that’s ok.

Our brain is smart. So smart that for the most part these little actions we perform time and time again become second nature. This is great for helping us make tea, but not so great when we’ve formed a link between the tea and the biscuit tin.

So next time you feel yourself reaching for a digestive to have alongside your morning coffee stop for a second and use the power of your mind to kick the habit. Just as we have created the habit, we can also break it. We can tell you how.

Use mindfulness to be aware of your body and your actions and put yourself back in the driver’s seat. Recognise the urge to munch and replace reaching for the biscuit with a different action. Take that coffee outside and go for a 5 minute walk. Call a friend for a chat. The more times you break the pattern, the easier it will get.

We can apply the same mindfulness techniques to break all sorts of habits from comfort eating to stopping smoking. Take matters into your own hands and learn to become a master at managing your thoughts, feelings and actions.
